Les Petites Curieuses

Entre une promenade en Octobre, où l’on a l’impression que l’hiver a déjà pris place, sous un temps triste, horriblement venteux et un air beaucoup trop frais; et une en plein mois de mai, sous de douces températures et le soleil présent du début à la fin, y a pas à dire… C'est mille fois mieux en mai!

Pour la petite histoire, Canary Wharf se trouve sur l’île aux Chiens, en plein coeur des docklands, ancien grand centre portuaire londonien.

Il est aujourd’hui l’un des plus importants quartiers d’affaire, après la City, et en bordure de la Tamise à l’est londonien, on pourrait se dire qu’il n’y a rien d’intéressant à voir là-bas… Faux! D’abord, on y trouve les trois plus hauts gratte-ciels du Royaume-Uni : le One Canada Square mais plus formellement appelé le Canary Wharf; la tour HSBC et la tour Citigroup. Ce sont ceux que l’on repère le plus facilement de loin, depuis le Sky Garden ils sont très facilement repérables.

Et pourquoi parler d’un quartier futuriste? Parce que sans même en avoir vu des photos, le terme est assez évocateur de ce à quoi il peut ressembler. Pleins de buildings, de banques, la modernité est partout! On sent que le quartier est en constante modernisation ou rénovation. On peut apercevoir à de nombreux endroits des travaux en plein cours, avec une idée visuelle de ce à quoi les projets vont ressembler. Les briques laissent la place aux vitres et au neuf, à la végétation, à la lumière… C’est moderne quoi! L’architecture change bien des autres quartiers que l’on a pu voir jusqu’à aujourd’hui. On ne trouve aucun équivalent.

If you had to choose between a walk during winter, sad, cold and terribly windy; and one in May, with milder temperatures and the sun from start to finish… It’s obvious, isn’t it? It’s much better in May.

Briefly, Canary Wharf is located over the Isle of Dogs, within docklands heart, former great harbour centre of London. This is nowadays one of the most important business centre, aside the City, on the Thames’ edge at East London. So you might think there is nothing interesting to see there… You wrong! First, the three highest skyscrapers of UK are found there : the One Canada Square and more formally called the Canary Wharf; the HSBC building and the Citigroup one. These are the ones you can easily spot from far; for example from the Sky Garden, it is easy to spot them all.

Then, you might ask yourself why are we talking about futuristic borough? First for the good reason that this phrase is meaningful of what this looks like. Plenty buildings, banks, and modernity is everywhere! We really feel there, that this is almost always in modernisation or renewal. We can see many places under construction with pictures of what these will look like. No bricks, only glasses, plants, and lots of light… Everything is new and modern! The architecture is such different comparing to other boroughs we went through until today and we don’t find one similar.

Bref, voici donc ce que l’on peut vous suggérer comme choses à voir en vous y baladant!

Entre les deux sorties de stations de métro, il y a un petit parc que vous pouvez traverser rapidement. Ensuite vous pouvez effectuer un grand tour au bord de la Tamise tout autour du quartier. En passant par les North Docks, on peut apercevoir un immense bateau, le Crossrail Place Roof Garden, sur Fishermans Walk, dans lequel se trouve un jardin botanique, nous on voit plutôt ca comme une sorte de forêt un brin exotique, aux airs de jungle, et absolument incontournable! En levant le nez, les gratte-ciels imposants se dressent. A quelques mètres, sur les bords de la Tamise, tout plein de petits restaurants très bien exposés au soleil! A voir, il y a aussi Cabot Square, au centre, sa fontaine entourée de hauts buildings, et toujours de hauts buildings.

Ah oui et autre chose à faire absolument, rester jusqu’au coucher du soleil et l'admirer avec vue sur la City, des bords de la Tamise, non loin de Canary Wharf Pier. En ajoutant l’air marin, une lumière de soleil à couper le souffle, un magnifique voilier... c’est absolument divin et un cadre idéal pour clôturer une belle journée!

Anyway, here are all the things we suggest you to do if you decide to take a walk over there. Between the two tube station's exits, there’s a small garden you can walk through. Then you can head towards the Thames’ edges and walk all around the borough, because as you can see on our photos Canary Wharf is surrounded by the water. So you can walk along the Thames and admire all those giant skyscrapers. Walking around North Docks, there’s a huge boat : the Crossrail Place Roof Garden, on Fishermans Walk, in which there is a botanic garden but, to us, it looks more like a kind of exotic forest or a jungle. And this is unmissable! A couple of meters next to the boat, on the Thames’ edges, plenty of restaurants well exposed under the sun. Otherwise, you must also see Cabot Square, surrounded by high buildings, yes high buildings again… Oh yes, and one another thing you have to do is, staying till the sunset and admire it with a wonderful view of the City, from the Thames’ edge, next to the Canary Wharf Pier. If you add to all of this, the sea air floating, such splendid sunlights, and a beautiful sailboat… and this, is absolutely divine and perfect for ending the day there!

Bien que les dimanche soient particulièrement calmes et sans trop grande circulation, le quartier n’est pas complètement mort pour autant, pas mal de restaurants sont ouverts, en particulier près de la station de métro, mais aussi sur les bords de la Tamise aux pieds des buildings, ce n’est pas très dur à trouver. C’est vraiment plaisant d’aller faire un tour entre tous les buildings, les rues vidées de business men et de voitures. On imagine à quoi ca doit ressembler les jours de semaine, les rues doivent grouiller de gens pressés, qui ont pas le time…

Voilà, Canary Wharf c’est à faire une fois, si vous êtes friands, comme nous, d’endroits à visiter qui sortent de ceux basiques bondés de touristes comme vous! ;)

Although Sundays are quite calm and empty of people, Canary Wharf is not empty of life at all, there are restaurants opened , especially next to the station and also on the Thames’ edge so they are easy to find. This is really enjoyable to walk there around buildings, in streets quite empty of business people and cars. We can guess how the atmosphere looks during week days, like crowed of busy people…

There you have it! You should take a walk once there if, like us, you love walking in places beyond the basic and very touristic places. We still hope that you will appreciate this new post and all our photos, and that some of you will go there after having read it.
